The high, dry mountains of Ladakh are spot-on for epic freeriding. Not to forget the abundance of natural singletrack trails that run throughout the region. Mountain biking in Ladakh is not something new; there have been plenty of prominent riders who’ve visited the region in the past. Renowned riders like Andi Wittmann, Guido Tschugg and Kelly Mcgarry have treaded the uncharted Ladakh terrain.
Though Ladakh has an impeccable landscape for mountain biking, it lacks the infrastructure to build a strong culture. We see places like Pune, Bengaluru, Himachal and even Nepal, where there is a growing mountain biking community. We took it upon ourselves to promote the sport and reached out to the rightful authorities for possible support. – Tenzin Jampel | Unexplored Ladakh
The J&K tourism department agreed to support the very first mountain biking festival in Ladakh. The MTB festival is scheduled for the 14th and 15th of September in Leh, near the famous Shanti Stupa. The venue, Disko Valley is 4km away from the main Leh town.
The festival is aimed at introducing and promoting the sport in the local community. The weekend will include introductory mountain biking competitions and workshops.
The festival would include workshops conducted by Unexplored Ladakh’s Tenzin Jampel along with India’s pioneering freerider, Vinay Menon. The workshops would cover bike setup for mountain biking, basic skills essential for riding on trails, jumping techniques, etc. The two day gathering will also include pump track challenge, short track downhill race on Disko Valley’s manmade course packed with features.
Ladakh MTB Festival 2019 at Disko Valley is a teaser of things to come in 2020.
